The Woman and Flame......
When I look at this piece I get and eerie feeling. i guess its because the woman is holding a skull in her lap. but of all things why a skull, is she in mourning, does it belong to someone that was close to her, its like it has a secret meaning that only she can understand. Also the way she looking at the flame, its like she's staring into the flame and fixated on it, like she stepped into a memory or day dream. But i think if this is to portray Mary Magdalen, i would think this scene is when she is in mourning over Jesus death, and wondering what life would be like now that he isn't with them anymore?

Mary Magdalen With The Smoking Flame by: Georges de La Tour
ReplyDeleteRemember that we also talked about the quick passing of life in class as well. I love that she doesn't even seem to know we are in the room with her so deep is her grief and introspection. The use of tenebrism in this piece really sets and emotional stage for us to understand what this woman was feeling.
